John of Nepomuk

John of Nepomuk
(1340–93)
   Saint and Martyr.
Little is known of the life of John of Nepomuk. He was Vicar- General of the Archdiocese of Prague and he defied King Wenceslas IV. Whether the issue was the diminution of clerical privileges, or his refusal to break the seal of the confessional to give evidence against the Queen, is not clear. Whatever the reason, the King ordered him to be drowned in the River Moldau. His cult was highly popular and he was canonised in 1729.
